Earlier today, Pres. Obama brought several business executives to the White House to discuss ways to encourage the House to vote on the Schumer-Rubio amnesty bill, S.744, before the end of the year. The bill, which would result in 33 million new work permits being issued in the first 10 years by granting amnesty to 11-18 million illegal aliens and doubling annual legal immigration flows, is being sold by the White House as a way to boost the economy and create jobs.

During his press briefing on Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner said that he's "hopeful" the House will move on immigration legislation before the end of the year. With House Republicans sticking to the mantra of border security before amnesty, it's likely the chamber will soon act on H.R.1417, the McCaul-Jackson Lee "border security" bill. Our legislative analyst Grant Newman has dissected the legislation, and he reports that the bill won't secure the border and even weakens existing law.

Critics fear undocumented workers will take advantage of shutdown

Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, a pro-enforcement group on immigration, complained that amid the federal shutdown resources were found "to move forward with Obamacare" and its online insurance signup but not the online E-Verify.

"It’s a sign that putting Americans back to work is never the top priority of this president or Republicans or Democrats in Congress," Beck said. He worries the federal government may not require employers to retroactively use E-Verify for anyone they hire during the federal shutdown. "That would be a grave mistake."

The lack of controversy, however, is precisely what makes this bill a major problem; it doesn’t actually do anything, aside from weakening current law.

Heavy Fall Agenda May Delay House Immigration Debate

House Republican leaders may have to delay consideration of immigration legislation, given the busy schedule that awaits the House when it reconvenes next week. In addition to debate over FY 2014 appropriations bills and a measure to raise the federal debt ceiling, a new agenda item -- military strikes in Syria -- will add to time pressures. New RNC Policy Promotes Amnesty Over Attrition Through Enforcement

At its Summer meeting last week, the Republican National Committee rejected the Attrition Through Enforcement policy established in its 2012 National Platform in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens. And since most voters do not support this shift in policy, the RNC has likely harmed itself.
