Nebraska Egg Plant Accused of Hiring Undocumented Workers

A former employee of Henningsen Foods in David City, Neb. has filed a suit against the company charging that they knowingly hired undocumented workers and gave them preferential treatment. The former worker was fired from the plant in 2007 and the charges are part of a wrongful-termination lawsuit against the plant.

Indiana State Senator Proposes Tougher Immigration Bill

Last year, Indiana Senator Mike Delph proposed an immigration bill that failed, but he's proposed a new bill which he says would be the toughest immigration law in the country. Delph filed Senate Bill 580 for the third straight year, which is designed to punish those who harbor, transport or employ illegal aliens in the State of Indiana.

Unicoi police to participate in training on illegal-alien issues

The Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department will participate in a federal program that will provide more training in handling issues related to illegal aliens that also could be used in other cases.

Sheriff Kent Harris and Lt. George Berry met Tuesday with two representatives of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency from New Orleans. The sheriff’s department had inquired about taking part in a program in which it would be able to take illegal aliens to a federal holding facility.

Cleaning Firm Used Illegal Workers at Chertoff Home

Every few weeks for nearly four years, the Secret Service screened the IDs of employees for a Maryland cleaning company before they entered the house of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the nation's top immigration official.

The company's owner says the workers sailed through the checks -- although some of them turned out to be illegal immigrants.

Texas county files appeal to stop border fence

A Texas county filed an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court this week in the latest bid to stop construction of hundreds of miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In asking the court to review a lawsuit previously dismissed by a federal court judge, lawyers for El Paso County contend that U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff overstepped his legal authority when he waived 37 federal laws that could have slowed or blocked construction of fencing along the border.

15 illegal immigrants arrested at BP refinery

Federal Immigration agents have arrested 15 illegal immigrants working as contract janitors at the BP refinery in Whiting, Ind.

The 11 men and four women arrested Wednesday by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement worked for an Illinois janitorial company. Fourteen are from Mexico, and one is from Guatemala.

'Visitor' driver's licenses assailed

Edwin Palacio arrived in the U.S. from the Philippines in 1993 and was granted political asylum two years later.

Since then he has worked for computer companies and received security clearances to audit private and government information systems. But the 54-year-old Austin resident is now identified as a "temporary visitor" on his new Texas driver's license, which he worries will hamper him and his wife in getting a home mortgage.

Alabama City to Target Contractors who Hire Undocumented Workers

The Albertville City Council in Northeastern Alabama approved a measure that will require contractors with three or more employees to use E-Verify. The city ordinance looks to ensure that contractors who provide services for the city hire employees that are legal to work in the United States.

ICE detainees arrive in Grand Island

Tuesday marked the start of housing federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees in the new Hall County Jail.

"We got our first vanload today," Supervisor Scott Arnold said at a county board meeting Tuesday.

He chairs the county's Corrections Steering Committee.

Arnold wasn't certain how many detainees were in a "vanload" and Corrections Director Fred Ruiz had already left Tuesday's county board meeting prior to Arnold providing an update to other supervisors on the ICE contract.

Man sentenced in fatal drunk driving case in Richmond

New city law targets illegals

The Albertville City Council passed a resolution Monday targeting contractors who employ "unauthorized aliens."

The move comes just one month after the new mayor and council took office, signaling a more serious tone regarding illegal immigration.

"That should be a pretty good indication we're serious about that hot topic from the campaign," said Councilman Chuck Ellis.

"You talk to everybody on the campaign trail and that was the one thing everyone wanted to talk about ... the effects of illegal immigration on the community."

Detaining illegals simplified through partnership with Henderson

The Macon County Sheriff's office is stepping up its role in immigration enforcement by partnering with Henderson County in an effort to speed the process of identifying illegal aliens.

Henderson County is one of seven in North Carolina participating in the newly formed 287(g) program. As part of the new cooperative effort, Henderson's sheriff's office can access federal immigration records. The county will also work with 17 western counties, including Macon, to assist in identifying and even detaining suspected illegals.

AZ Businesses Losing Interest in Immigration Policies

The State of Arizona has one of the toughest laws against employers who hire undocumented workers, but a recent poll shows that the law has had little impact on small businesses in the state. Three-quarters of the respondents said Arizona's employers sanctions law -- which imposes tough penalties on employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens -- has had little effect on their businesses.

Poll Reveals NO Mandate for Amnesty

The Federation for American Immigration Reform had Zogby international conduct a post-election poll and the results show that Americans are against an immigration plan that includes amnesty. The poll revealed that actual voters from the recent election favor tougher enforcement and that amnesty for illegal aliens would "further harm the interests of struggling American workers."
