200 Illegal-Alien Workers Losing Their Jobs at Pacific Steel

Pacific Steel in Berkeley, Calif. is laying off 200 illegal-alien workers who weren't able to provide valid documents after an audit conducted by the Department of Homeland Security. Earlier this year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement requested the company's I-9 files and found that the paperwork for 200 workers, approximately one-third of the company's total workforce, didn't match up.

Georgia's mandatory E-Verify law is driving farmers to use the H-2A guestworker program, which has no ceiling and which was created specifically for the needs of agriculture. Growers, however, often eschew the H-2A program in favor hiring illegal aliens which is always more convenient than filling out federal forms and reporting back to the federal government. Now that Georgia's law makes it harder to get away with illegal hiring, farmers are looking for legal workers. According to WXIA-TV / 11 Alive in Atlanta, some aren't happy about it.

Disabled Vets Benefiting from the Expanding Use of E-Verify

A new report from Lincoln, Neb. reveals that disabled veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan are finding jobs because of the increasing number of companies using E-Verify. The report focuses specifically on three vets that now work for the Lincoln Verification Operations Center. The new center works under U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and helps private businesses verify new hires using E-Verify.

Alabama jobless rate falls amid immigration reform

Alabama’s unemployment rate fell at a record pace in November amid stepped-up efforts by President Barack Obama’s deputies to frustrate enforcement of the state’s popular new immigration reform.

The state’s unemployment rate fell 0.6 percent in November to 8.7 percent, according to new state reports, partly because the state’s employers opened up jobs to Americans after shedding illegal immigrants.

Evidence in Minnesota that Attrition Through Enforcement is Working

A new report from a Minnesota newspaper, the Austin Daily Herald, shows that enforcement measures taken at the local level are indeed reversing illegal immigration trends. A combination of factors, including police checking immigration status to businesses scrutinizing documents more during the hiring process, illegal aliens are finding it harder and harder to live in the state and are repatriating to their home countries.

E-Verify is gaining in popularity, even in states that have tried to limit its use. But it will take a federal bill like Lamar Smith's Legal Workforce Act to require every employer to use the free, online program. Employers who use E-Verify give it high marks and recommend it to others but too few sign up for it unless they are required to do so.
