The mainstream news media is scrambling to explain why a "comprehensive immigration" bill that they virtually guaranteed would pass didn't. Many reporters and commentators echo the analysis of Molly Ball of the Atlantic who writes that the coalition of advocates for the Senate immigration bill is "no match for the illogic of today's Washington, where political imperatives, voter preferences, and even the desires of moneyed interests are powerless to move House Republicans off a default stance of 'no.'"

Some argue that evangelical leaders are out of step with their congregations on immigration. A recent poll of likely evangelical Republican voters released by NumbersUSA, which endorses lower immigration levels, found that 63 percent of respondents "strongly oppose" a bill described as giving "work permits to an estimated 7 million illegal immigrant workers." Pulse Opinion Research conducted the poll.

Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, a group that helped defeat a similar immigration effort in 2007 and is fighting hard against this year's efforts, said Boehner and other Republican leaders are still looking for ways to pass some kind of immigration overhaul. He said they feel a political need to do so to win over the ever-growing Hispanic electorate.

NumbersUSA: House border security bill weakens current law

Published:

A one-page memo produced this week by the limited immigration group NumbersUSA argues that the House’s border security bill actually weakens current law and could act as a shield to allow Republicans to vote for “amnesty.”

In the document NumbersUSA compares provisions in the House’s border bill with provisions in the Secure Fence Act of 2006 and the 2004 Intelligence Reform and Terrorism.

Evangelicals Battle Over 'Biblical' Immigration

Polling data is mixed on that score. Is Immigration Really Dead in the House?

Published:

All this should add up to a dead issue. "So why am I not sleeping at night?" queried Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, a grassroots group that has effectively lobbied dozens of rank-and-file House Republicans to oppose anything that could lead to legalization of people without papers. "What worries me is that Boehner and the business lobbies get together to pull some kind of maneuver" for a limited legalization/guest-worker/border-security bill. "Then Democrats in the Senate will say, 'Maybe this is our last chance until 2017,' " he said.

House Democrats Scheming to Keep Amnesty Alive

That sentiment was echoed by Rosemark Jenks, director of governments relations for NumbersUSA, a group that opposed the Senate bill. She said Obama's Department of Homeland Security has methodically cut back on worksite raids targeting undocumented workers and scaled back deportations, leaving "absolutely no disincentive" for people in other countries thinking about trying to enter the USA illegally.

Sen. Jeff Sessions

Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) detailed the impacts the Gang of Eight's immigration bill, S.744, would have on legal immigration numbers and said the interests of all Americans are be pushed aside to satisfy the interests of business and ethnic groups. Sen. Sessions urged the House to completely disavow S.744 and move forward with a plan that would "refocus the immigration debate on the rights, needs, and concerns of U.S. citizens."

Corporate Layoffs Precede Call for More Foreign Workers, Amnesty

A large number of corporations that recently laid off American workers are now urging House leaders to import more foreign workers and legalize illegal aliens, according to the Washington Examiner. Jon Feere of the Center for Immigration Studies notes, "The companies claim (immigration reform) is an 'opportunity to level the playing field for U.S. employers' but it is more of an effort to level the wages of American citizens."

Remembering 911 And Its Effect On Comprehensive Immigration Reform & Laws

For Roy Beck, president of Numbers USA, which advocates limiting immigration overall, this new focus on enforcement was a relief since it changed a growing pattern of legalization legislation. "There have been zero amnesties passed since 9/11," he says. "It may be that 9/11 did change the environment so that it became harder for Congress to continue to pass an amnesty every couple years."

However, shareholders and executives will lose in the long-run, he warmed.

Heavy Fall Agenda May Delay House Immigration Debate

House Republican leaders may have to delay consideration of immigration legislation, given the busy schedule that awaits the House when it reconvenes next week. In addition to debate over FY 2014 appropriations bills and a measure to raise the federal debt ceiling, a new agenda item -- military strikes in Syria -- will add to time pressures. Aides to Republican leaders told the Wall Street Journal that there are no plans at this point to bring immigration bills to the floor.

New RNC Policy Promotes Amnesty Over Attrition Through Enforcement

At its Summer meeting last week, the Republican National Committee rejected the Attrition Through Enforcement policy established in its 2012 National Platform in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens. Since illegal aliens would be legalized but denied citizenship, the RNC’s spin suggests the new policy would cause no harm. But the work permits offered to illegal aliens cause the greatest damage. And since most voters do not support this shift in policy, the RNC has likely harmed itself.
