Majority Leader Harry Reid has said the Senate's focus will be on passing a jobs bill with bi-partisan support. Eight Republican Senators, led by Sen. Jeff Sessions, sent Sen. Reid a letter on Thursday asking him to include immigration-related provisions in the jobs bill.
The Indiana Senate overwhelmingly passed Sen. Mike Delph's E-Verify bill by a 46-to-4 margin. The bill now moves to the House for its approval.

After receiving numerous complaints from trade unions, Baltimore County Council Members have unanimously passed a resolution urging County Executive James Smith to enact an E-Verify mandate for companies that receive county contracts. Unions claim that contractors who hire illegal aliens are winning contracts with lower bids.
I have spent two of the last three years living safely and happily in countries that currently have Temporary Protected Status: Nicaragua and El Salvador. And I have visited a third: Honduras. While these countries have their respective problems, continued TPS is by no means necessary.
The candidates were asked whether they would force employers to use the E-verify system to ensure that only legal citizens are hired.
Medina: No. "We have a process in Texas. . . . We use the I-9 forms. . . . Also, the Texas driver’s license is an acceptable form of identification . . . yet in Texas we are issuing Texas driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. Stop issuing Texas driver’s licenses toward illegal immigrants would go a long way."
Pres. Obama's obtuse sentence on immigration in his address to the nation revealed a great fear of how the American people would react if he directly called for more foreign workers and for permanent jobs for the estimated 8 million illegal foreign workers. He seemed to be trying to signal to the supporters of amnesty and "comprehensive immigration reform" that he was still behind them but in words that the voters watching on TV wouldn't understand:
With more than 15 million Americans unemployed, Pres. Barack Obama discussed his plan to put them back to work during his first State of the Union Address. But Pres. Obama failed to mention any type of Immigration Suspension, insisting on the continued importation of 125,000 foreign workers per month.

Roy Beck, executive director of Numbers USA, said the report strengthens the case against granting amnesty to illegal immigrants.
"There are more than 7 million illegal aliens holding non-agricultural jobs," said Beck, whose organization favors reduced immigration levels. Pres. Obama supposedly got into hot water with disabled Americans last week when he made a joke about his bowling skills and Special Olympics to Jay Leno. But his true insult to the handicapped was his insistence last week on keeping 7 million jobs (currently held by illegal aliens) out of reach. The first-ever official unemployment rate report on the disabled tells the story (and my handicapped wife has a story, too) . . .
The jobless rate jumped to 8.1% according to numbers released by the Labor Department this morning. It's the highest rate since 1983. Another 651,000 jobs were cut in the month of February.
The lobbying today on Capitol Hill is intended mainly to intimidate Democratic Members of Congress into thinking that if they don't support Rep. Guitierrez (D-Ill.) and his amnesty plan that they will be seen as anti-Hispanic. But an amnesty would be the most anti-Hispanic action Congress could take in this time of raging unemployment, disproportionately high among Hispanic-Americans.
The Census Bureau’s latest “economic report card” indicates that while there was a slight increase in the overall poverty rate between 2006 and 2007 -- from 12.3 percent to 12.5 percent -- the poverty rate for immigrants in particular jumped from 15.2 percent to 16.5 percent.

Steve Camarota's report found a correlation between the dramatic decline in summer employment among American youth (16-24 years) and the siginificant increase of immigrants working during the summer months over the last decade.
