Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) introduced the SAVE Act (H.R.830) on Tuesday - a bill that would mandate E-Verify nationwide, strengthen border security, and improve interior enforcement. The SAVE Act was previously introduced by Deomcrat Rep. Heath Shuler who retired at the end of the last Congress. Rep. Graves bill is identical to the legislation offered by Rep. Shuler.

Last week marked the end of the second quarter of the 112th Congress. While the first quarter was somewhat lethargic, the second quarter has proven to be very productive, even if some of the Freshman Members still require a remedial education. Indeed, some of these freshmen campaigned on strong “true reformer” immigration messages, yet have done nothing but make procedural/party-line votes and colorful excuses since joining the Congress.

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) reintroduced his comprehensive immigration enforcement legislation that would mandate E-Verify nationwide, strengthen border security, and improves interior enforcement. The SAVE Act (H.R. 2000) was introduced with 36 original co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle. This is the third consecutive Congress Rep. Shuler has introduced the legislation.

E-Verify Checking 1 in 4 New Hires

According to a report released to the Center for Immigration Studies from the Department of Homeland Security, E-Verify is being used to verify the workplace eligibility of 1 in 4 workers. The system remains mostly voluntary, although 12 states have some mandatory usage laws in effect. Still, E-Verify is being used by more than half a million worksites and could have more than 12 million queries in 2009.

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) is putting the final touches on this year's SAVE Act, which he plans to introduce in Congress within the next few weeks. Shuler first sponsored the legislation during the last Congressional session, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi kept it off the floor, and the attempt at a discharge petition fell 28 signatures short.

Teen/Young Adult Joblessness Worsening

With foreign workers filling jobs traditionally held by teenagers and young adults, the Washington Post reports today that the youth jobless rate for June was at its highest level in the last 60 years, according to a new study. Northeastern University's Center for Labor Market Studies analyzed Labor Department data and found that only 37 percent of teenagers ages 16 to 19 were employed nationwide, compared with 51 percent in June 2000.

On May 22, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) signed the discharge petition for the SAVE Act, just days after being sworn into office as a Member of Congress. This brings the total number of discharge petition signers to 189, just 29 shy of the 218 needed to force a floor vote on the bill. Rep. Scalise replaces Rep. Richard Baker in Louisiana’s first congressional district. Rep. Baker had a career “A” grade from Americans for Better Immigration.

The congressmen need 218 signatures on their petition; right now, they have 188. Only 10 of those 188 signers are Democrats, and they run the risk of retaliation from the Democratic Party leadership...."

American Legion Launches National Education Effort on Illegal Immigration

The American Legion has launched a nationwide education initiative to alert the nation to the dangers posed by unhampered illegal immigration and the government's unwillingness to address the issue.

The Legion is launching a coast-to-coast media campaign to explain the dangers of of illegal immigration. It will also offer a booklet, free to the public, which outlines the dangers and offers logical policy initiatives.
