Speaker Ryan Supports Trump Border, Anti-Sanctuary Policies

During a CNN town hall meeting yesterday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., said he agreed with President-elect Trump’s policies on securing the border, deporting criminal aliens, and defunding sanctuary cities. Ryan also said he wants to find a “good, humane solution” for illegal aliens participating in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Mary Ann Mendoza, the mother of a sanctuary-city police officer killed by an illegal alien with a criminal history, asked Ryan how he would prevent similar tragedies from occurring. Ryan said, “Donald and I agree completely on that…Sanctuary cities are a violation of the rule of law and they are not to be tolerated...And that means if you want federal assistance, you’re not going to get it. You’ve got to enforce the law.”

Ryan continued saying “What the president-elect has asked us to do is focus on two things in Congress with respect to the issue immediately...We’re getting Congress working on that now, and that’s to secure the border and to enforce our laws with respect to violent criminals who are illegal aliens…We passed this law…ten years ago to secure the border, and it never got done because of this past administration. We now have a president serious about securing the border, he’s telling us it’s one of the top six things he wants to get done in Congress, and we said absolutely.

Later Ryan was questioned by an illegal alien participating in the DACA program. Standing with her daughter, Angelica Villalobos said “Do you think that I should be deported?” Ryan said, “No, I can see that you love your daughter, that you’re a nice person that has a great future ahead of you, and I hope your future’s here…When people get confident in this country that our border is secured, that our laws are being enforced, then I really believe the country — all people in the country — will be in a much better position to fix these bigger, thornier problems. But if you’re worried some deportation force is coming and knocking on your door this year, don’t worry about that.” Ryan said he was talking to the Trump transition team about protecting illegal aliens in the DACA program.
