The latest U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) report shows that border apprehensions increased by 27% from last month but remains 64% lower than May 2016. The CBP concluded that this seasonal uptick matches historical trends and expects the number to increase through the summer months.
In May 14,535 border crossers were caught up from 11,129 in April. This is still a drastic decrease from the over 40,000 border crossers apprehended in May 2016.
The number of unaccompanied minors apprehended at the border also increased from 997 in April to 1,493 in May. 1,577 family units were caught in May up from 1,118 in April.
