The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) released a report today that shows the harmful impact mass immigration to the U.S. has on the environment. Immigration from overseas to the U.S. increases the world’s overall carbon emissions and reduces the amount of open spaces left in the country
"All the gains the U.S. has made through our many conservation initiatives and improved efficiency are being wiped out by mass immigration," FAIR President Dan Stein said. "Immigration fueled more than half of U.S. population growth in the last 50 years, and will generate three-quarters of it in the next 50 years."
According to the report, “each immigrant who moves to the U.S. on average quadruples his or her global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission.” When an immigrant comes to the U.S. they usually travel more by car, eat more meat, and use more energy than they would have in their home country. This causes an increase in overall CO2 emissions and “makes it more difficult for the U.S. to meet its GHG reduction goals.”
FAIR’s report used National Wildlife Federation data that concluded that the sprawling of human population from urban areas to communities that are more reliant on cars could lead to the disappearance of 30% of animal and plant species in the country.
