DOJ Files Statement of Interest in TX Sanctuary City Case

Published:

The Dept. of Justice has filed a “Statement of Interest” supporting Texas’ new law that bans sanctuary city policies throughout the state. The State of Texas is currently being sued by several Texas cities and others who oppose the SB4 law.

The SB4 law restricts cities, counties, and universities from prohibiting their local law enforcements agents from asking about a person’s immigration status and enforcing federal immigration law. Texas is the first state to ban sanctuary cities.

Now the state is being sued by several open border groups and Texas cities including: San Antino, El Paso, Dallas, Austin, Houston, and El Cenizo in an effort to block the law.

The DOJ contacted the plaintiffs of the case and told them they would be filing the statement and that they planned on being involved in the upcoming court hearings on the case.

In filing the Statement of Interest, Attorney General Sessions provided the following statement:

“President Trump has made a commitment to keep America safe and to ensure cooperation with federal immigration laws. Texas has admirably followed his lead by mandating state-wide cooperation with federal immigration laws that require the removal of illegal aliens who have committed crimes.

“The Department of Justice fully supports Texas’s effort and is participating in this lawsuit because of the strong federal interest in facilitating the state and local cooperation that is critical in enforcing our nation’s immigration laws.”
