Travis Childers, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Mississippi, became the first Democrat to sign FAIR's Anti-Amnesty pledge on Thursday. The GOP candidate in the race, Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), has yet to sign the pledge.
FAIR's pledge includes three planks:
- oppose "any form of work authorization" for illegal aliens
- oppose legislation that would increase the number of legal immigrants
- oppose bills that increase the number of "guest workers"
"It looks to me like Mississippi voters have a choice," Mississippi grassroots activist, Kevin Broughton, told Breitbart News. "One candidate is on the record opposing amnesty for illegal aliens; has never voted 'no' on building a fence on the Southern border; ... The other is Thad Cochran."
The GOP establishment in Mississippi has actively pursued an immigration policy that would grant amnesty to more than 11 million illegal aliens and increase legal immigration flows. Former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour campaigned tirelessly for the Senate Gang of Eight's bill last summer, and worked on the Bipartisan Policy Center's immigration task force that made similar recommendations. That task force was headed by Becky Tallent who now serves as House Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) immigration advisor.
While Sen. Cochran opposed the Gang of Eight's amnesty bill in 2013, he did vote to bring the bill to the floor for debate and has been relatively quiet on the issue.
