Citing House Leaders’ Plot, Republican Drops Amnesty-Bill Sponsorship

Published:

Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., dropped his co-sponsorship of an amnesty bill Republican leaders want to include in the Department of Defense authorization bill, Breitbart reports. Duncan said he was unaware of the plot and objected to adding the measure to an unrelated bill.

The bill in question (ENLIST Act) would allow certain young illegal aliens to get legal permanent residency – the first step toward citizenship – if they joined the military. The Center for Immigration Studies’ Mark Krikorian and Breitbart broke the story about the efforts by Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Calif., and House Republican leaders to add the bill to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Duncan said he was unaware of the plot. He said that effort was a “sneaky trick” and added, “NDAA would lose my vote as well,” if it succeeded. He posted an explanation of his decision to drop his co-sponsorship on Facebook.

In a Breitbart interview, Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said “Everything by the illegal alien allies is part of a bigger play. There is always the risk that those in Washington that wish to betray the American people on behalf of illegal aliens will slip some language into some place that opens the floodgates to the detriment of American workers.”

Commenting on Duncan's action, NumbersUSA President Roy Beck said, "We salute Congressman Duncan for his quick reaction to revelations about the secret efforts that would create a legislative vehicle that could be used to start moving an amnesty through Congress this year. We are hopeful that other co-sponsors will also withdraw their support after their constituents alert them to the dangers. Upon seeing the news on the secret efforts, NumbersUSA began mobilizing our national activist network to ask all Representatives to resist Rep. Denham's efforts. And we will continue to do so until we are confident that the House Republican leaders will keep the promise they made in February not to bring up immigration legislation this year because there was no way that such legislation would not be misused."
