Dairy farmers who employ immigrant workers should “sit tight” and do things the way they have done in the past, despite President Barack Obama’s recent executive action related to immigration, an immigration attorney said here Jan. 14.
Kelly Fortier, a partner in the employment relations group at the Michael Best & Friedrich law firm, said while the president’s recent action should pave the way for more illegal immigrants to stay in the U.S. at least temporarily, the executive order doesn’t mean dairy farmers should do anything differently in terms of dealing with their current employees.
On Nov. 14, the president announced a series of executive actions to crack down on illegal immigration at the border, prioritize deporting felons but not families, and to require certain undocumented immigrants to pass a criminal background check and pay taxes in order to temporarily stay in the U.S. without fear of deportation.
