In his January 25th executive order Pres. Trump reinstated the Secure Communities program allowing ICE to broaden their enforcement priorities. Since then ICE’s interior arrests of illegal aliens have reached 2014 levels before the Obama administration initiated the Priority Enforcement Program (PEP), which limited ICE to only apprehending illegal aliens who committed felonies or multiple misdemeanors.
ICE has completed its mid-year assessment of foreign countries that cooperate with ICE in accepting back their foreign nationals that have been ordered deported from the United States. Countries that refuse to accept, or that delay the acceptance of, their nationals are considered to be uncooperative or recalcitrant.
Saturday marks Pres. Donald Trump's 100th day in office, and immigration has been a key component of his 100-day agenda. Thus far, Trump has solely relied on his executive powers to stem the tide of illegal border crossings and beef up interior enforcement. And while he's taken some good first steps in addressing legal immigration, he's yet to take strong action on protecting American workers from the steady flow of cheap foreign labor that drives down wages and increases job competition for workers.
The latest DHS report shows an unprecedented decline in illegal border crossing traffic resulting in the lowest number of border apprehensions in the last five years. Total border apprehensions decreased by 40% from 31,578 in January to only 18,762 in February.
Pres. Donald Trump signed a new executive order today that rescinds his Jan. 27 refugee order reworking several of the original provisions while keeping others intact. The new order, which goes into effect on March 16, will pause the issuance of new visas for six countries identified as hot spots for terror for 90 days, pause the refugee resettlement program for 120 days, and cap overall refugee resettlement for FY2017 at 50,000.
Five of the seven countries included in Pres. Trump’s Jan. 27 executive order are on the list of recalcitrant countries who refuse to repatriate deported aliens, and the administration could block the issuance of new visas to these countries under current law, according to the Immigration Reform Law Institute. Additionally, an earlier executive order signed by Pres. Trump called for blocking visas to recalcitrant countries.
The Center of Immigration Studies (CIS) has reviewed a Senate report on individuals convicted in terror cases since 9/11 and found that 72 individuals came from one of the seven countries listed in Pres. Trump’s executive order as a hot spot for terror. His order was blocked by both a Federal District Judge James Robart and the Ninth Circuit Court last week. Judge Robart claimed that there was no evidence that individuals from these countries posed a national security risk.
Two federal courts blocked Pres. Trump's immigration executive order that pauses both the refugee resettlement program and the entry of immigrants and nonimmigrants from seven countries identified by Congress and Pres. Obama as hot spots for terror. In response, the Trump administration said it will honor the rulings, but that it will continue to fight for the executive order in court.
