Democrats' Immigration Platform Focuses on Amnesty, Calls for 'Limits' to Legal Immigration

Published:

The immigration section of the 2016 Democrat Platform, "Fixing our Broken Immigration System", calls for lifetime work permits for illegal aliens, continued support for Pres. Obama's executive amnesties, extra protections of Unaccompanied Alien Children from Central America, and rewards for illegal aliens, including access to the healthcare exchanges. The Party's platform, approved on Monday, does, however, call for "reasonable limits" on legal immigration.

Primary challengers were lining up against North Carolina incumbent Renee Ellmers and her history of supporting amnesties and increases in foreign workers. But after a federal court ordered the last minute redrawing of the Congressional district boundaries, Ellmers was pitted against Congressman George Holding. Still, it wasn't enough to save her seat after a 4-year history of voting against her constituents' wishes on immigration.

NY Times, Rubio hit Trump for hiring foreign workers

One of the top headlines on the front page of this morning's New York Times reads "Foreign Labor Fills Vacancies at Trump Club." The story details the Mar-a-Lago resort's preference for hiring foreign workers through the H-2B visa program over hundreds of American workers who were referred to the club for jobs. It's interesting to see the story in the Times' after it ignored the fact that the massive omnibus spending bill passed by Congress in December quadrupled the H-2B visa program for FY2016.

A Genuine Debate on Immigration Shows Signs of Emerging in Republican Primary

The Republican presidential primary debate this past Tuesday helped to better define where the various top-tier candidates stand on immigration. Jeb Bush, who is wildly unpopular with Republican voters, reiterated his support for blanket amnesty for twelve million illegal aliens. John Kasich went even further than Bush in the debate, calling illegal aliens “law abiding” and denouncing Americans who support enforcement efforts. While neither Bush nor Kasich at this point look to have a realistic shot at the nomination, in large part due to their positions on immigration, they should get credit for being honest about their intentions. Neither man pretends that he believes the interest of the American people takes precedence over the demands of illegal aliens (or probably more correctly the demands of donors who fund their campaigns.)
