USCIS Reporting Fewer H-1B Visa Applications
United States Customs and Immigration Services said that 42,000 of the 62,000 applications will go to foreign workers, while 20,000 will go to foreigners who were awarded advanced degrees at American universities.
The declining economy and job cuts at major tech companies have had an impact on the reduced number of applications filed, but experts still predict that the number of applications will exceed the number of visas available. Foreign students can't apply for H-1B visas until after they graduate, so more applications are expected then.
H-1B visa holders are allowed to stay and work in the United States for three years. The annual limit is 65,000, but it has fluctuated to more than 100,000 during stronger economic conditions.
