Communications Director
NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation / NumbersUSA Action
Washington, DC (Capitol Hill) — In-Office | Full-Time, Exempt | $75,000–$100,000 commensurate with experience
About NumbersUSA
NumbersUSA is a national, non-partisan nonprofit founded in 1996. We facilitate civil, fact-based public debate on federal immigration policy, grounded in the recommendations of bipartisan federal commissions — including the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, chaired by Barbara Jordan.
Our work centers on lowering overall immigration levels to serve the national interest, including economic fairness for working Americans and environmental quality of life for future generations.
As the nation’s largest grassroots immigration-reduction advocacy organization, NumbersUSA mobilizes millions of activists, publishes real-time congressional grade cards, and maintains a strong presence across earned and digital media.
Position Overview
NumbersUSA is seeking a skilled communications operator and media relations professional to amplify the organization’s message across all external channels.
This role is intentionally designed around execution, not message ownership. This position reports directly to the Co-President who oversees messaging and communications. The Communications Manager’s job is to take established messaging content and make sure the world hears it: pitching it to journalists, extending it across platforms, and building the infrastructure to do it consistently and at scale.
Over time, the right hire will absorb NumbersUSA’s messaging, tone, and policy voice well enough to draft supporting materials independently. But the core of this job is amplification, distribution, and relationship-building — not originating the message.
This is a one-person communications operation. The hire will work closely with the Co-President and coordinate laterally with the Digital Marketing and Creative teams.
Key Responsibilities
Media Relations & Earned Media
- Pitch organizational spokespersons and content to national, regional, and policy-focused journalists
- Maintain and expand relationships with reporters, editors, and producers covering immigration, politics, and policy
- Coordinate and schedule media interviews and appearances

- Manage rapid-response communications during legislative developments and breaking news
Cross-Platform Message Amplification
- Take content produced by the chief spokesperson — including the organizational newsletter, statements, and policy positions — and ensure it is accurately reflected across all external channels
- Liaise with the Digital Marketing team to extend earned media and newsletter content across digital platforms
- Work with the Creative team on supporting images, graphics, and video assets
- Maintain message discipline and consistency of voice across all outputs
Newsletter & Website Content
- Draft the repeating weekly sections of the organizational newsletter, drawing on items supplied by the Co-President as well as items independent media monitoring
- Finalize the weekly newsletter draft in Salesforce and coordinate the send with the Digital Marketing Director
- Adapt each week’s newsletter into an article for the website
- Write additional website articles as assigned
- Manage website article publishing, including posting and light editing of drafts
Strategic & Administrative Communications
- Support development and maintenance of a communications and media calendar
- Build and maintain media contact lists

- Genuine interest in immigration policy and the national public debate around it from a non-partisan perspective
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Political Science, or related field — or equivalent experience
Preferred
- Experience in a nonprofit, advocacy, political, or issue-based communications environment
- Familiarity with federal legislative processes and the congressional press ecosystem
- Experience coordinating with creative, digital, or marketing teams
- 3–5 years of relevant experience; strong candidates earlier in their careers who can demonstrate media placement results are welcome to apply
What We’re Really Looking For
