Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) introduced the Mandatory E-Verify Act of 2026 last week, a bill that permanently reauthorizes E-Verify and requires employers to use it.
E-Verify helps employers verify that they are following existing law by only hiring workers authorized for employment in the United States.
The free, online system has enjoyed bipartisan lip service for years. What it lacks is champions.
“We should enforce the law and ensure jobs go to Americans,” Senator Britt said, “and I will work diligently to usher this legislation through the Senate and get it to President Trump’s desk.“
That’s the kind of action this Congress needs.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a new law to extend the Volunteer State’s E-Verify requirement to public sector employees. The bill (HB1705) builds on legislation NumbersUSA developed with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in 2024.
