Rep. Lamar Smith asks Chamber of Commerce to "Put the American People First"
In a Washington Times op-ed, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) attacked the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for its opposition to the E-Verify program at a time when the Chamber has asked the Congress to "put the American people first."
The Chamber of Commerce urged the Congress to pass the financial rescue bill in order to "put the American people first." However, Rep. Smith noted that the Chamber "[refuses] to put the needs of the American people over those of illegal [aliens]." He makes a point of detailing the Chamber's abhorrence for the E-Verify program.
The Chamber criticized President Bush's executive order requiring all federal contractors to use E-Verify and has opposed local and state attempts to mandate the system's use. Rep. Smith made it clear that "American workers deserve better."
