Great Britain's Population to Reach 70 Million by 2027; 68% Due to High Immigration Levels
Great Britain's Office for National Statistics has released new information that reveals that the nation's population will exceed 70 million people by the year 2027 and grow to more than 73 million within 25 years. The Office says new immigration and children born to new immigrants will contribute to 68% of the population growth. Great Britain's current population is 62.3 million.
"These figures confirm that the UK's dramatic rise in population will continue unabate," SIr Andrew Green who chairs the group Migration Watch UK said. "The population is now set to hit 70 million in 16 years' time, over two thirds of which is due to immigration. As people return home this evening crammed into public transport and on congested roads, they could well ask where all of these people are going to fit."
Great Britain currently has the fourth highest population density among European countries. Only the Netherlands, Belgium, and Monaco are more densly populated.
"That's why we have made sweeping changes to get a grip on immigration in this country, closing down routes subject to abuse and taking action against those with no right to be here," UK Immigration Minister Damian Green said. "Much has been done, but there is more to do to bring down net migration to the order of tens of thousands a year and ensure migration which benefits the UK."
