State Legislators’ Group Seeks End to Automatic Citizenship For Children of Illegal Aliens
The group State Legislators for Legal Immigration announced the creation of a task force that will develop model legislation aimed at ending an interpretation of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment that has enabled children born here to illegal aliens to obtain citizenship. These so-called “anchor babies” provide their parents access taxpayer-funded benefits and give them a means to eventually obtain legal residency.
The group’ s founder, Pennsylvania State Rep. Darryl Metcalfe, said “The mission of this task force is to deliver a legislative solution that all 50 states can use to shut off a primary economic faucet that encourages pregnant illegal alien women to sneak across the border to have their babies, and in the process, reclaim hundreds of millions of hard-earned American tax dollars.”
The Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) will provide the task force with the legal expertise necessary to ensure that the model legislation is constitutionally sound.
Arizona State Sen. Russell Pearce, a task force member and author of the famed SB 1070 enforcement law, said he is already drafting a bill for consideration in the 2011 state legislative session. Although he did not outline details of the bill, Sen. Pearce indicated that the measure would not be retroactive.
