L.A. Mayor Wants Official ID for Illegal Aliens
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has climbed aboard the bandwagon pushing for ID cards for illegal aliens. However under his plan, the card issued would be considered a full-fledged photo ID.
L.A. Councilman Richard Alarcon recently proposed a more limited “library card” that could serve as identification for opening banking accounts and function as a debit card. But Mayor Villaraigosa wants to go further.
Under the mayor’s plan, the card would look like a student ID and have the bearer’s photo, street address, date of birth and physical characteristics. Law enforcement agencies could choose whether to recognize the card, which would not substitute for a driver's license or be acceptable ID for air travel. It could function as a prepaid debit card, so illegal aliens can more easily access cash without carrying it around. Villaraigosa says that would reduce crime.
The card program would be run by a vendor who would charge applicants between $10 and $20 to obtain a card, and a few dollars per month for the debit service, which would be optional.
A City Council committee will discuss the ID card proposal on Tuesday.
