Sen. Vitter to Offer Census Amendment to CSJ Spending Bill
When the Senate returns to consideration of the Commerce, Justice and Science spending bill, Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) will offer an amendment that would require the 2010 decennial census to add questions regarding citizenship status. The Senate temporarily set aside consideration of that bill when Senators failed to invoke cloture on October 13.
Currently, the 2010 decenniel census does not include a question asking residents about their citizenship status. Without the inclusion of a question, several states are at risk of losing representation in the House of Representatives as well as votes in the Electoral College. Sen. Vitter's amendment will safeguard those states. (View a map of states that could gain/lose seats in the house if illegal aliens are counted in the 2010 census.)
If the 2010 census counts illegal aliens, California and Texas would gain a significant number of House seats at the expense of several states in the Midwest and Southeast.
