Federal Contractors Must Use E-Verify Starting 1/15/09
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that Federal contractors and subcontractors will be required to begin using E-Verify starting Jan. 15, 2009 to check their employees’ eligibility to work in the U.S. Companies awarded a contract thereafter will be required to enroll in E-Verify within 30 days and begin using the employment verification system to verify that all new hires and current contract-related employees are work eligible.
Federal contracts awarded and solicitations issued after Jan. 15, 2009 will have a clause inserted requiring E-Verify use if the contract amount is over $100,000, unless it concerns commercially available off-the-shelf items. The same clause will be inserted in subcontracts over $3,000 for services or construction.
Over 92,000 employers currently use E-Verify. During Federal fiscal year 2008, more than 6.6 million employment verification queries were run through E-Verify, which represents 1 out of every 8 hires made in the United States.
