UK Advisor Warns of High Population
One of Gordon Brown's leading green advisers issued a warning that Britain risks sustainability issues if their population is not reduced. Jonathon Porritt will show in a report to the Optimum Population Trust that if the nation doesn't cut its population to 30 million then it risks not being able to feed itself.
In a report published on the TimesOnline.com, Porritt said, "Population growth, plus economic growth, is putting the world under terrible pressure ... Each person in Britain has far more impact on the environment than those in developing countries so cutting our population is one way to reduce that impact."
Britain's current population is expected to grow from 61 million to 71 million by 2031. The report has gained some attention from government officials, including the immigration minister who said, "You can’t have sustainability with an increase in population." But most officials have avoided the issue.
