Obama Considering Troop Deployment to the Border
"We're going to examine whether and if National Guard deployments would make sense and under what circumstances they would make sense," Obama said, according to an account by McClatchy Newspapers. "I don't have a particular tipping point in mind. ... I think it's unacceptable if you've got drug gangs crossing our borders and killing U.S. citizens."
Reports state that more than 1,000 deaths have resulted in Mexico because of drug gang violence, and the violence has spilled into some U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Phoenix and Birmingham.
Lawmakers in Washington have held several hearings on Capitol Hill this week and a plan from the Department of Homeland Security includes as a last resort, deploying troops to the border. Troops would be called in when border patrol and other agencies are overwhelmed by the situation.
Mexico has already responded by deploying 3,200 troops and about 700 federal police to Ciudad Juarez on the Texas border to try and control the violence.
