Sen. Schumer Pushes for National ID Card
The idea is consistent with his stand that Americans will be more open to an amnesty bill if the country can prevent future illegal immigration.
"The ID will make it easy for employers to avoid undocumented workers, which will allow for tough sanctions against employers who break the law, which will lead to no jobs being available for illegal immigrants, which will stop illegal immigration," Schumer wrote in his 2007 book, Positively American. "Once Americans are convinced that we will permanently staunch the flow of illegal immigration, they will be more willing to accept constructing a path toward earned citizenship for those who are already here."
According to a Los Angeles Times article, a Schumer aide said that the Senator will likely bring up the national ID card during one of the two immigration hearings scheduled for this summer.
The national ID card is creating a wedge between the open-borders groups. The ACLU says the national ID card would be an invasion of privacy, but the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and some labor unions favor the national ID card over workplace verification tools like E-Verify.
