House Immigration Committee to Hold Hearing on Illegal Aliens brought to the U.S. as Children
The House Immigration Subcommittee has announced that it will hold a hearing next Tuesday, July 23, regarding the fate of illegal aliens who were brought to the United States as children. The hearing was announced as Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said that he supported an amnesty for this class of illegal aliens during a press conference with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).
Last week, Rep. Cantor announced that he was working with House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) on a bill that would be similar to the DREAM Act that grants amnesty to illegal aliens that were brought to the country as children. In a meeting with business lobbyists yesterday, Gang of Eight leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said that he would conference the Senate-passed bill that grants amnesty to all illegal aliens with a smaller amnesty passed by the House.
"[T]he history of our country is one that moved away from holding kids liable for the deeds, misdeeds, commitment of crime by parents," Rep. Cantor said. "And these, in many instances, are kids without a country if we don't allow them to become full citizens of our country."
Speaker Boehner also went along with Cantor's sentiments.
"These children were brought here of no accord of their own, and frankly they're in a very difficult position, and I think many of our members believe that this issue needs to be addressed," he said.
