Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. Shows Support for Arizona
Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. council members officially expressed the city's support of Arizona on Wednesday when the council voted on a resolution Wednesday night. Passage of the resolution also includes a new ordinance, requiring all business with city contracts to begin using E-Verify.
Rancho Santa Margarita became the fourth Orange County city to formally show its support for Arizona's new immigration enforcement law, joining Yorba Linda, Costa Mesa, and Orange.
Council members who attended last night's meeting voted unanimously to support the resolution, and even the one council member who couldn't make the vote, sent in a letter expressing his support.
"Unchecked illegal immigration has negatively impacted the city of Rancho Santa Margarita, the state of California and our entire nation," said Mayor Pro Tem Tony Beall. "I don't believe we need comprehensive immigration reform. I believe we need comprehensive and consistent reinforcement of our nation's existing immigration laws."
The council first brought up the resolution earlier this summer, but decided to create an online poll for residents who could express their opinion on the topic. Of the 522 respondents, 442 supported the resolution.
