Four Arizona House Republicans Reject Gang of Eight Proposal
A group of four Arizona House Republicans, including Matt Salmon, Trent Franks, Paul Gosar, and David Schweikert sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner on Tuesday stating their opposition to the Gang of Eight's amnesty proposal. The four House Members told Speaker Boehner that immigration reform can be dealt with only after the border is secured.
"As the House begins to debate possible immigration reform proposals, it is vitally important to those of us who represent Border States that the first priority of any reform is securing our Southwest border. . .
"Only after first securing our borders can we begin to contemplate discussions of additional immigration reform."
The group of four highlighted the escalating drug cartel violence that's overtaken the U.S.-Mexico broder in Arizona and the potential for terrorists to easily cross the border undetected.
The group emphasized that determintation of complete border security must be based on an independent commission rather than federal bureaucrats with a political objective.
"If we do not follow this protocol, we will replay the failed immigration reforms of 1986 when we lost the trust of those in our communities to take on the difficult task of securing our borders. . .
"We cannot allow this to happen again."
