Tennessee to Consider Arizona-style Immigration Enforcement Law
Tennessee legislators plan to introduce an immigration enforcement law that would be similar to the one passed earlier this year in Arizona. State Sen. Bill Ketron and Rep. Joe Carr are putting together a bill that would allow local law enforcement to detain an individual suspected of being an illegal alien.
Tennessee's neighboring states of North Carolina and South Carolina have also indicated that they will consider laws similar to Arizona's.
“You can’t deny how [illegal immigration] is affecting us, from education to healthcare to the judicial system to incarceration, and more importantly the number of jobs it’s taken away,” State Senator Ketron said.
Tennessee already has a few state-level immigration enforcement laws on the books. All Tennessee jails are already required to verify the immigration status of all detainees. The state has also passed laws preventing illegal aliens from obtaining a driver's license and its considering legislation that would reinforce the federal ban on in-state tuition to illegal aliens.
