Colorado In-State Tuition Bill Defeated in Committee
A bill that would extend in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens was defeated in the State House Education Committee. The bill, SB 126, was passed by the State Senate before being defeated, 7-to-6, in the House committee. It's the fifth time the bill has failed in the Colorado Legislature.
The Republican-led committee argued that passing SB 126 would encourage future illegal immigration and provide a false hope for illegal alien students who would be ineligible to work in the United States after graduation.
The bill would have offered the lower tuition rate to illegal aliens who graduated from a Colorado high school or received a GED and attended a Colorado high school for the three years immediately preceding. They also had to be accepted to a state university within one year of earning their high school degree.
