Markup of Amnesty Bill Scheduled; Sen. Sessions Protests
Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Pat Leahy (D-Vt.), has officially scheduled the markup of S.744, the Gang of Eight's "comprehensive immigration reform" bill that includes an amnesty for most of the nation's 11-18 million illegal aliens, for Thursday, May 9. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) continued his vocal opposition of both the bill and the speed at which Chairman Leahy wants to proceed with the bill by reading a page of it during today's Committee meeting.
The Gang of Eight's bill is 844 pages long, and it's filled with waivers and exemptions that refer to other sections of the bill and current sections of federal immigration law, making it difficult and time consuming for analysts to figure out the details. Sen. Sessions cited an article published by the Christian Science Monitor earlier today that discussed the total number of green cards that would be issued each year under the legislation. Sen. Sessions said that members of the Gang of Eight don't even know the answer to the question.
