AFL-CIO Teams up with Pro-Amnesty Group for Immigration Overhaul
President of the AFL-CIO John Sweeney and the leader of the Change to Win federation Joe T. Hanson will present a plan that will offer Amnesty to illegal workers, but would prevent any new programs that would bring more temporary workers. The plan, however, would not gain support of the business coalition led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce who is pushing for a guest-worker program. The plan also doesn't consider the 13.2 million Americans that are out of work.
"In our current economic crisis, Americans cannot afford to lose more jobs to illegal workers," said Representative Steve King, an Iowa Republican who sits on the House Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, in a New York times article. "American workers are depending on President Obama to protect their jobs from those in America illegally."
The compromise also proposes a "depoliticized," independent commission that will assess the economic conditions to determine the number of foreign workers allowed into the country at any given time. Like the rest of the plan, the commission proposal raises concerns for Chamber of Commerce and other pro-Amnesty groups.
