Reid Says Immigration Reform a Priority
Several open-border groups were on Capital Hill last week lobbying for amnesty, and Pres. Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor was making the rounds as well. So, it set the perfect tone for Reid's declaration.
“As far as I’m concerned we have three major issues we have to do this year, if at all possible: No. 1 is healthcare; No. 2 is energy, global warming; No. 3 is immigration reform," Reid said.
In recent weeks, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) who heads the Senate Immigration Subcommittee has been holding a series of hearings examining whether or not now is the time for amnesty and immigration reform. Obama said earlier in the year that his administration can't consider an amnesty without showing the American people that the borders can be secured. Schumer has used his hearings to try and demonstrate that the borders have been secured because of a reduction in border apprehensions.
Schumer, along with other lawmakers, will meet with Pres. Obama at the White House to discuss immigration on June 17.
“We’re going to try,” Schumer said. “If we can get it done, we always try to move when you can. That’s why I took the Immigration subcommittee, because I think it’s doable.”
