Senate Democrats Might Add ENLIST Amnesty to Defense Bill

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., is exploring a bid to add to the National Defense Authorization Act an amnesty for illegal aliens who join the military, according to Politico. A similar effort concerning the ENLIST Act is already under discussion in the House.

Durbin told Politico that he has already spoken to Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., about the matter. “I think that he would be open to my offering the amendment,” said Durbin. “I’ve been working on it for years with this secretary of Defense and his predecessor and the White House. I think it’s a great idea.” Levin told Politico, “I think it’s relevant enough to our bill, and it’s worth trying to get it added.”

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., warned that adding the amnesty could impair passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). “I think it could threaten the bill, and would cause controversy,” said Sessions. “I don’t think it should be in the NDAA. We have no shortage of personnel for the military. In fact, we are removing large numbers of personnel who want to serve.”

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., this week said he was worried the defense bill could get bogged down over the matter. “We’ve got to be careful that we don’t load up the defense bill. People will say, ‘Wait a minute, then I want the STEM on the NDAA. I want the farm workers on the NDAA,’” said McCain, referring to other provisions of “comprehensive immigration reform.”

But Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said inclusion of the amnesty might not sink the bill. “I think it makes eminent sense,” Graham said. “I think that hopefully it’d be received in a bipartisan fashion. That’s progress.”

Rep. Jeff Denham’s (R-Calif.) quest to include his ENLIST Act in the NDAA has run into substantial opposition. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon, R-Calif., this week said he thinks his committee would run into a jurisdictional problem with the Judiciary Committee if ENLIST is included. He also said, "I'm in favor of a discussion on that policy, but not on putting it on our defense bill. I don't think that's where it belongs." McKeon’s committee will continue its markup of the NDAA next week.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

I have a question. Something as massive as the NDAA will surely go to conference committee. We were concerned that including the ENLIST amendment in the House bill would make it possible for a conference committee to add the substance of S. 744 in conference. Does that danger still exist if ENLIST is included in the Senate NDAA bill? I don't know the arcane rules that govern such things.

(Graham said. “I think that hopefully it’d be received in a bipartisan fashion. That’s progress.”)
What Graham is saying; it will be Pro-Amnesty and anti-Citizen. I smell Graham and his Special Interest Groups, Elitist Political Contributors, and ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS behind this approach to Amnesty! This is the same basic Amnesty that Graham, McCain, and "W" attempted to pass all during "W's" two terms; their approach now for Blanket Amnesty is piece by peice until they have their Blanket Amnesty! Graham has always been supported by the Chamber of Commerce; they always claim to follow Immigration Laws but continuously become confused about the interpretation of the law. Graham is already the darling of the Pro-Amnesty groups, he spent the last several years speaking with all of the Pro-Amnesty Special Interest Groups! He was also one of the Pro-Amnesty Senators who received a wink from then President Bush with a comment of "I will see you at the signing" of course referring to their anticipated signing of their adored Blanket Amnesty Bill.

You are right, Glen. This is another stealth amnesty being engineered by the likes of Senator Durbin (D) and Senator Graham (R). The people of Illinois and South Carolina need to remind this pair that bipartisan treason is still treason.

Yes, it's interesting to me they talk about how it will be "safe" to pass amnesty after the primaries. They're saying they know the American People don't want this but maybe they could foist it on us between elections. Dirtbags one and all.

It does seem kinda of strange Teri, when most comments on this issue on news articles say the total opposite what the people want.all they have to do is read comments here, on MSN and Yahoo to see how angry and pissed American citizens are over all this pandering to the illegal aliens. But I doubt that our leaders in DC would ever do it!

Terri 9170 of IL's picture

Exactly. They have to know we don't want any amnesty, yet they keep pushing it. The Dems believe it would give them absolute power in the U. S. so they won't need to worry about the American majority voters. The RINOS only think as far as the kickbacks they're getting from the corporatists.

At one time when I was in the service, late 60's early 70's, if you held legal status you could join the military and the way I understood it this would assist the individual in obtaining Citizenship. At that time there were a few from Cuba and seemed a few more from Eastern Europe that were in the service attempting to obtain citizenship. Now they want to legalize millions of ILLEGALS and potentially allow them into the service with the promise of citizenship. How did that work out for Rome and as you stated the United States has had problems and still having problems with some present military members, next add potentially millions of ILLEGALS whose loyalties often stay with their home countries.

I don't know about this. Isn't there some sort of a program like this already? If this would pass, It would have to be clear that there could be no chain migration of any of his family members. If his parents or any family were here, they would have to return to their own country.

We can see how one damn thing after another is going on with these illegal aliens. Driver's license, in-state tuition, work permits, extended VISA's and everything else. THIS HAS TO STOP!

We DO NOT want or need comprehensive immigration reform (amnesty), for the illegal aliens. What we do want and need is comprehensive ENFORCEMENT reform to drive the illegal aliens back to their own country where they belong. I can't be more clear.

How in the hell did we get so many dumb people to run this Country. I got a 7 grade education, but I not stupid!! !! I don,t think !!

Gene 5798 of TX's picture

Don, I doubt very much that you would be stupid. Two of the greatest I've known had limited educations My Father had an 8th grade education, my mother had a 6th grade education. Dad said back in the 50's when Ike started limiting the acres that he could plant in wheat that that would come to haunt us. That it would be the death of the family farm, and if they got away with that it would soon be that the local merchant would go away, too. Guess what, his predictions are very much true.

How did they get that stupid, those running government,Dad likely saw that one, too. He would say to me, "Gene, don't get so damn smart that you outsmart yourself!" Our government has no representatives that truly represent the average working citizen or the real local businessman. Lawyers, few accountants, few doctors, few judges, but over educated and little common sense applied in government today, just control of others. Just my opinion, but I'm sticking to it!

We need more Americans to March our streets n town halls and make our voices heard more n more! Does anyone know what happens on May 16th?

Gene 5798 of TX's picture

If not national, that movement will likely fail unless they attract even more followers because of local headline attention. I hope they actually wake some Americans up, not saying I was committed to the Colonel's method but something has to turn Washington SOON!

The Colonel was planning a peaceful protest which would have been attractive, but could Washington have kept it peaceful? After NV/Bundy/BLM, I would not bet on it.

The Treason Lobby is the real deal for a politician who's willing to sell out. By supporting amnesty and more mass immigration, he gets financial and political support from both the Robber Barons and the cultural Marxists (from Harvard to Hollywood). The only losers in this game are the American people; and Durbin isn't the only Senator who finds this irresistible.

Clearly, the military does not need to become a cheap labor employer by offering illegals military wages AND citizenship to join up - more compensation than Americans get. As pointed out the move might broaden to include comprehensive amnesty in the defense act.

Dick Durbin's favorite bill about amnesty for illegal aliens has been preoccupied for many years. He always brings it up in Congress. He never talks something else like wanting to help so many unemployed Americans, national security, etc. Do you know what is he like? -- he's all bad news to our country!

Philip 5927 of AZ's picture

"When I look around this room, I see America's future. Our doctors, our teachers, our nurses, our engineers, our scientists, OUR SOLDIERS, our Congressman, our Senators and maybe our President." -- Dick Durbin on a congressional hearing. Did he mean that maybe someday an illegal alien could be president? What a black humor! I don't think he just doesn't know anything about the rule of law and the Constitution. He really doesn't want to bother reading them and remember them. He continues to mock them! It is a safe bet this treacherous politician has never honored them! Did you hear him saying "our soldiers"? That is why he wants to add ENLIST amnesty to Defense bill for illegal aliens. Disgustfully, he won't forget them! Let us fight NOT to let his dream comes true!

May 16th, 2014 Washington, D.C. This is one of the few opportunities that we'll have to stop this madness! These politicians are cowards who pretend that they can't hear the masses screaming at them that we WANT OUR LAWS ENFORCED, OUR BORDERS SECURED AND ILLEGAL ALIENS OUT OF OUR COUNTRY!!! When we show up in masses demanding what we want....maybe they'll hear us then. My bet is that they will. May 16th, 2014. Be there if you mean what you've been screaming over this internet.

Amnesty is great for those illegals that are already here, but there is one big problem, our economic status at this time cannot handle to financial burden this will place on our government. We already have too many natural born U.S. citizens that are out of work and they need to get back to work long before we put into place any type of amnesty.

The illegals are already working for less than minimum wage in most places as they are willing to do anything to stay here. Any business that employs illegals under the table should be fined for doing this as they just want to save money. They also know that most of these illegals are of Hispanic or Haitian descent and that is probably why these businesses hire someone who is a legal citizen and is of Hispanic in origin so they can be the supervisor of the illegals.

I have seen small motels in my area that use a contractor service for their housekeeping staff so they are not responsible for the those illegals working there. I know this is true as I had worked in one such a place for almost a year.

Do no allow amnesty as it is taking food out of the mouths of U.S. citizens trying to get back to work.

Glenn 4959 of CO's picture

I always believed that America doesn't fight with foreign mercenaries. The ENLIST portion of the NDAA would do just that. Besides, the illegals would be able to bring over their families. I get really tired of Democrats sneaking in their pet projects on a funding bill like NDAA.

Durbin got Levin to join as a sponsor of the agriculture amnesty 5 years ago. That scheme was work 5 years in agriculture and your are permanently legal. So over over 70 years there would have been 14 immigrants in the program for every agricultural job filled. A very high price for unskilled labor. This is a consistent approach offer some powerful group some temporary cheap labor for citizenship.
